NEWS

★ Turkey on Saturday reopened the Bosporus straight to traffic after briefly closing it due to a suspected mine.

An underwater security team examined the object. It turned out to be an old mine, and the security team neutralized it, said Turkey's National Defense Minister Hulusi Akar.

Commenting on rumors that underwater mines laid by Ukraine to deter Russian attacks in the ongoing war might drift across the Black Sea, Akar said they notified both Russians and Ukrainians and that coordination was ongoing.

★ The British magazine Spectator writer Owen Matthews wrote that both sides were after Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's loyalty in the Ukraine-Russia conflict.

Matthews writes that Mr. Erdoğan has emerged as a powerbroker in the conflict.

He also said that the use by Ukraine of Turkey's Bayraktar TB to drones unexpectedly turned out to be the most effective weapons in the war, along with US-made and British weapons.

Mr. Erdoğan's son-in-law's company manufactured the drones.

Matthews also pointed out that Mr. Erdoğan has described himself as the only European leader to be friends of Vladimir Putin.

He also explained that Turkey's purchase of Russian-made S-400 missile defense systems triggered a crisis in NATO and between Turkey and the U. S. Later, the U. S. imposed sanctions on Turkey and removed Turkey from the advanced F 35 stealth fighter program. Turkey was supposed to purchase 100 of these state-of-the-art jets.

Turkeys Antalya city on the Mediterranean
★ British Magazine The Economist reported that Istanbul became the preferred destination for thousands of Russians fleeing their country due to the war in Ukraine.

At least 14,000 Russians moved to Turkey since the beginning of the conflict.

Turkey has not closed its airspace to Russian commercial flights, and Russians can travel to Turkey visa-free, making it easier for them to go to Turkey.

The Economist writes that this is reminiscent of the 1920s when White Russians escaped the Bolsheviks in large numbers, and some ended up choosing Istanbul as their destination.

Also, Turkish daily Duvar reported that both Ukrainians and Russians are flocking to Turkey's Mediterranean resort province of Antalya to buy or rent houses. The housing market in Antalya is seeing a sevenfold boom in demand, and prices have surged threefold.

Antalya is not alone in the surge: Istanbul, Izmir, Ankara, and Bursa are following the Mediterranean province as destinations for the Ukrainian and Russians, the daily Duvar adds.

According to the Turkish Statistical Institute, Russians became the third-largest number of foreign buyers of houses, and Ukrainians now ranked eighth. Real estate experts expect a surge in March.

Antalya Trade and Industry Chamber chairman Davut Çetin said that a declining Turkish currency is also a factor in luring the Ukrainians and Russians.

★ According to a recent survey by Turkey's polling agency ORC, the ruling alliance between President Erdoğan's Justice and Development Party and the ultranationalist National Action Party could only get 16% support from Turkey's Gen Z. The opposition alliance could get 44% for the same group.

Gen Z includes anybody born after 1996

ORC surveyed 2650 people in 51 provinces of Turkey.

★ The Committee to Protect Journalists asked the Turkish government to investigate threats against Turkish journalist Altan Sancar.

Sancar announced on Twitter on Tuesday that while visiting his family in Turkey's southeastern city of Diyarbakır, three men with guns stopped him. The three threatened him but let him go eventually. The man used a Turkish expression to indicate that he was gone beyond the limit.

Sancar covers the Turkish capital and politics in his reporting as an independent journalist.

The Committee to Protect Journalists asked for his safety.

★ According to the Turkish daily Duvar, three Iranian migrants facing deportation from Turkey after attending a women's rights protest have applied to the United Nations for help.

The lawyer for the three will take the case of the Iranians to the United Nations working group on arbitrary detentions group, citing violations of freedom of expression and attendance in a peaceful protest.

The Turkish government is accusing them of attending a banned press conference and posing a national security threat.

Iranians deported from Turkey face harsh sentences. The Iranian authorities sentenced two deported in 2020 to death.

★ According to a draft report by the Council of Europe, Turkey fails to uphold basic democratic norms.

The broad definition of terrorism by the Turkish authorities led to charges against local officials for minor actions or political expression and violated the basic standards of democracy, the report wrote.

The report also said that government actions also provoke tensions and conflicts.

After the 2019 local elections, Turkey's Interior Ministry removed dozens of mayors from office, who got elected from the pro-Kurdish Democratic People's party ticket.

Turkey is facing suspension from the Council of Europe for its detention of Osman Kavala, a politically active businessman, and philanthropist. He has been held in jail since 2017 without a conviction. The European Court of Human Rights ruled that Turkish authorities should release him. However, Turkey refused to abide by the court's ruling.

★ According to Bianet, Istanbul Metropolitan Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu accused Mr. Erdoğan's Justice and Development Party administration of seeking to bankrupt the public transport and water companies by not allowing price hikes to offset inflation.

Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality is seeking a 50% increase in public transportation fares. Mayor İmamoğlu said fuel prices increased 120% over the past few months.

He also said that the electricity now costs 300% more.

★ According to the Anatolia News Agency, Turkey's president Erdoğan said that his government is trying to ensure that the weight of inflation does not crush the Turks. Mr. Erdoğan was inaugurating a new airport in the Tokat province.

The official Turkish inflation rate in February was 54%. However, independent experts put it over 100%. Economists blame the soaring costs on Mr. Erdoğan's wrong policies.

★ Turkish red meat prices went up 50% recently after a decree by the Meat and Milk Board reports the Turkish daily Cumhuriyet. Except for three countries, the government also banned the export of red meat to stabilize the prices.

One pound of ground beef has now reached $2.5 and stew meat $2.8. According to the BBC Turkish service, meat prices will go further up by 30% over the next few months.

★ According to the Turkish daily Dünya, Turkey's competition board started an investigation into five chain stores and 15 suppliers for possible price-fixing.

Last year, the justice and development party-led administration fined the five chains $182 million for breaking competition laws.

★ According to a survey by Turkey's central bank, the industrial confidence index fell to 108.5 in March, the lowest level since a currency crisis peaked in December.

Also, the Turkish Statistical Institute reported that confidence among companies in the retail, services, and construction industries fell in March.

In February it was 119.8, in March it is 116. In the construction industry, it was down to 81 from 82.7. A figure less than 100 reflects pessimism.
