NEWS

★ Turkish president Mr. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan visited Saudi Arabia and met the king and the de facto ruler Crown Prince Salman.

Mr. Erdoğan has been critical of Saudi Arabia for many years. Analysts say he is making a U-turn now to mend ties because of economic hardship in Turkey. Mr. Erdoğan may be hoping for Saudi money, analysts add.

As we reported to you last week, a Turkish court also stopped prosecuting Saudi operatives in absentia for killing journalist Khashoggi in Saudi Arabia's consulate in Istanbul.

Observers point out that although Turkish courts are supposed to be independent. However, most judges and prosecutors get their orders from Mr. Erdoğan and his administration.

At one time, Mr. Erdoğan also accused the Crown Prince of complicity in Khashoggi's murder.

Erdoğan administration and Saudis also didn't see eye to eye with groups that Turkey backed. Mr. Erdoğan was very fond of the Muslim Brotherhood movement. The movement is illegal in Saudi Arabia and its birthplace Egypt.

The Saudi authorities defined the movement as a terrorist organization.

In addition to the Muslim brotherhood, Mr. Erdoğan also backed Hamas of Palestine and other Islamist organizations.

In reaction to the Erdoğan administration's accusations of the murder of Khashoggi, Saudi Arabia imposed an unofficial boycott on Turkish imports.

★ According to the online news outlet i24, Turkey deported dozens of people identified with Hamas to Israel. Analysts interpret the move as Turkey's one more effort to improve ties with Israel. For the past 20 years, Turkey has been critical of Israel and lent its support to Hamas.

★ According to news reports, a Turkish court sentenced Turkish businessman and philanthropist Osman Kavala to life imprisonment for allegedly organizing the Gezi Park events in 2013. He spent 4 1/2 years behind bars without a conviction.

Analysts say Mr. Kavala is a scapegoat, and President Erdoğan makes an example out of him so that anybody who opposes him in the business world would back down.

Many governments and individuals around the world have condemned the sentencing.

Reuters reported that Bob Menendez, Senate Committee on Foreign Relations chairman, criticized Secretary of State Antony Blinken for not condemning the sentencing.

In December 2019, the European Court of Human Rights ruled that Kavala should be released since there was insufficient evidence that he committed a crime. The Turkish government has ignored it since then. And on Thursday, Mr. Erdoğan said that the European Court of Human Rights ruling no longer applied.

The sentencing of Mr. Kavala had extensive coverage throughout the world. The Financial Times said that it shows Turkey's lamentable march to autocracy.

In the meantime, the Erdoğan administration cracked down on people opposing the sentencing. On April 28, it removed the governor of the Aegean province of Uşak when her husband for criticizing the verdict with a tweet. The husband was once a parliamentarian from Mr. Erdoğan's party. On April 27, the police arrested 51 people in Taksim Square in Istanbul for protesting the court's decision.

Turkish politicians, including former allies of Mr. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, also condemned the verdict. According to the online news site T 24, Mr. Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, the chairman of the main opposition Republican People's party, pointed out that a Turkish court acquitted Mr. Kavala in a previous trial of the charges. The Turkish data Duvar reported that Mr. Kılıçdaroğlu said that no justice would come from courts that are under the government's control and that have been receiving instructions.

★ Russia-Ukraine conflict and Turkey:

★ According to Bloomberg, Russian oligarch Alexander Abramov's $100 million yacht Titan is likely going to Turkey. As we reported to you in the weeks, other Russian billionaires have moved their yachts to Turkey to evade sanctions by the U.S. and European governments.

★ Mr. Erdoğan said this week that he had arranged the prisoner swap between the U.S. and Russia. A U.S. Marine in prison in Russia was flown to Turkey and at the tarmac exchanged for a Russian pilot who was in prison in the U.S.

According to Turkish sources, in a phone conversation on Thursday, Russian President Putin thanked Mr. Erdoğan. Mr. Erdoğan said that, in turn, he told Mr. Putin that Turkey was ready to do more to end the conflict between Ukraine and Russia.

★ According to the Anatolia News Agency, Turkish president Mr. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan had a phone conversation with the Ukrainian president Mr. Volodymyr Zelenskyy on April 24.

Mr. Erdoğan told Mr. Zelenskyy that civilians and injured people in the siege of Mariupol should be evacuated. Mr. Erdoğan also discussed the negotiation process between Ukraine and Russia. He emphasized that Turkey is ready to provide all means of support and mediate.

★ According to the online news site T 24, Antonio Guterres, the United Nations Secretary-General, met with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in Ankara.

The two discussed the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

They said that humanitarian corridors should be opened, and they should be effective. Mr. Guterres and Mr. Erdoğan acknowledged the common objective is to end the war soon.

After visiting Turkey, Mr. Guterres traveled to Moscow to meet with Russian President Mr. Putin.

★ According to Turkey's Anatolia News Agency, Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that arms sales to Turkey should be expedited.

Turkey is currently under sanctions and cannot get any arms from the U.S. The U.S. administration enacted the sanctions when Turkey purchased an S-400 air defense system from Russia in 2019. The U.S. and other NATO countries objected to the purchase, saying that Russia could use the air defense system to spy on NATO.

The sanctions include the F 35 fighter Jets. Turkey was supposed to get 100 of these jets. Now Turkey is asking for 40 F-16 fighter jets and 80 modernization kits for the existing ones in the Turkish Air Force.

However, the U.S. Congress opposes any sales because of Turkey's conflicts with Greece and the U.S. ally Syrian Kurds.

However, the State Department thinks that Turkey's support for Ukraine and its defense ties provided an important deterrent in the region.

★ Turkey's top court, the Council of State, ruled that the Erdoğan administration's withdrawal from the Istanbul Convention violated the law.

The convention is called the Council of Europe Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence against Women and Domestic Violence. Mr. Erdoğan signed a decree in March 2021 to withdraw Turkey and claim that current laws in Turkey were sufficient to protect women. Analysts claim that he wanted to appease the conservatives who alleged that the convention was for promoting LGBT education and was against traditional family values.

★ ECONOMY

★ According to the Turkish Statistical Institute, the Turkish foreign trade deficit grew by an annualized 75% in March to $8.17 billion. Exports were $30.9 billion and imports $22.7 billion.

Mr. Erdoğan's government is pushing to increase exports to lessen the pressure on the Turkish currency. The Turkish lira lost almost 50% of its value last year.

★ The statistical Institute also published revenue from tourism and Turkey. The numbers show that it increased to $5.45 billion exceeding even pre-pandemic levels.

The largest group of tourists comes from Russia these days. Turkey keeps its air space open to flights from Russia even during the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Turkey's finance minister Nureddin Nebati said that Turkey has also expanded the Russian Mir payment system to enable Russian tourists to use it since they cannot use Visa and MasterCard anymore.

There were 6.45 million visitors in the first quarter of Turkey. In 2021 there were only 2.6 million tourists.

★ Şahap Kavcıoğlu, Turkey's central bank governor, announced that they expected inflation to double by December. The new inflation rate projection is 42.8%, which is still significantly lower than independent economists' measure.

The governor also said that they should not raise the interest rates. In fact, with orders from President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, the bank has been lowering the interest rates. Economists say that this runs contrary to economic theory and is one of the reasons why inflation has been steadily increasing.

Mr. Erdoğan says Islam forbids interests.

★ According to a tweet by Thani Al Zeyoudi, the Minister of State for Foreign Trade, The United Arab Emirates is planning to double its trade with Turkey.

After many years of animosity between Turkey and the United Arab Emirates, Turkish president started courting the country to improve relations, to help the battered Turkish economy. According to Turkish officials, the current trade volume between the two countries is around $8 billion.

★ According to Bekir Ağırdır, the general manager of KONDA Research Company, in the past ten years the percentage of young people wanting to emigrate to other countries increased from 28% to 48%, reported the Turkish data Duvar.

He said that the reason behind the brain drain is now different than in previous years, as it used to be the "prospects" offered by other countries that had motivated Turks to go abroad. Whereas now people are migrating "due to hopelessness" in Turkey.

★ Nearly 300 works from the Nobel Collection will be on exhibition at Istanbul's Pera Museum.

The exhibition focuses on the invention of the printing press and illustrated magazines in the 19th century and the establishment of regular journalistic activity in the late 18th century.

The works describe the dialogue between mass media and art. Christoph Doswald curates the Good News Now exhibition, created from the "Art of the Press" collection by Annette and Peter Nobel.

The exhibition draws attention to most important issues in science, culture, and politics of the last 150 years of media history, from the 19th century to the present.

  M. Özalp Birol, General Manager of the Suna and İnan Kıraç Foundation Culture and Arts Enterprises, said, "Of course, the enormous transformation that the media has experienced in the last 20 years, digitalization and the emergence of social media play a big role in the formation of this era." Move before surviving torture

★ Turkish radio and television worlds documentary program "Off the Grid" received three awards at this year's New York Festivals TV & Film Awards for its work on Syria, Sudan, and Lebanon.

"Surviving Torture - Imprisoned Women of Syria" won the gold medal. "Sudan's Soldiers of Misfortune" earned a bronze medal, and "Lebanon, Between Two Evils" received a finalist certificate.

"Surviving Torture" follows the journey of former Syrian women detainees as they try to rebuild their lives.

The Syrian regime's brutal response to peaceful protests over a decade ago crushed lives and hopes.

The second "Off the Grid" documentary - "Sudan's Soldiers of Misfortune" - revisits Darfur, a region cut off from the world that still bears the scars of genocide.

Many residents of the volatile area have been looking for a better future elsewhere. This quest led some to the battlefields of Libya, some were tricked, and others trapped. All forced to kill.

The third documentary to have received an award, "Lebanon, between two evils," looks at the surge of violence there, fuelled by poverty.

Militias and sectarian leaders try to take advantage of the grim and explosive situation. So do criminal gangs. As a result, life is becoming harder by the day.

★ An archaeological dig in Turkey uncovered a massive underground city in Mardin. The researchers believe the underground city may be the largest in the world.

Archaeologists discovered the city when they were exploring a cave. They found that the cave contained passageways, core doors, silos, water wells, and places of worship.

Gani Tarkan, director of the Mardin Museum, who heads the excavations, said that while excavations uncovered similar underground cities in Anatolia, the one in Midyat is different. "Midyat underground city has been used uninterruptedly for 1,900 years. People first build it as a hiding place or escape area," he said.

He thinks that persecuted ancient Christians sought refuge in the city. He estimates that around 70,000 people lived underground.

★ Archaeologists found the oldest stairs at the excavations in Turkey's Çatalhöyük site. The site hosts a city that is estimated to be 9500 years old. Humans occupied the site for 2000 years. They built hundreds of mud-brick houses, burying their dead beneath the floors and adorning the walls with paintings, livestock skulls, and plaster reliefs.

The stairs are made of wood and are more like a ladder.
