NEWS

★ November 10, Turks in Turkey and around the world commemorated their independence war hero and the first president Mustafa Kemal Atatürk on the anniversary of his death.

Although some in the ruling Justice and development party much maligne him , president Erdoğan, leader of the party, and an entourage of his officials went to the mausoleum to pay their respects.

A large group of citizens, top brass of the military were also present.

★ According to the Turkish daily Duvar, Turkey's president Mr. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said on November 12 that Turkey is committed to seeking a piece dialogue between Russia and Ukraine. At the same time he accused the United States and other Western countries of provoking Moscow.

Mr. Erdoğan said "The West, and especially the U.S., is attacking Russia seemingly endlessly," without elaborating on what he meant.

He added: "Of course, Russia is displaying resistance in the face of all this."

Mr. Erdoğan made his remarks after attending A Summit of the Organization of Turkic States in Uzbekistan.

★ Mr. Erdoğan also said that if the control of the U.S. Senate goes to the Republicans, that may help Turkey's desire to buy F-16 jet fighters.

The David Duvar writes that the U.S. senate recently removed two amendments setting conditions on sale of F-16 Jets to Turkey.

Mr. Erdoğan also claimed that Mr. Biden is hiding Fethullah Gülen, a cleric whose followers were behind the failed July 2016 coup attempt in Turkey.

★ According to Deutsche Welle, German officials are reporting a dramatic increase in the number of Turkish refugees.

According to the federal police headquarters in Munich, the number of Turkish refugees arriving between January and September 2022 was 254% higher than in the same period the previous year. The increase compared to the same period from 2020 was 368%.

The reason for the increase is attributed to high inflation, poverty and no freedom of expression in Turkey.

Deutsche Welle adds the following on the lack of freedom of expression:

"Turkey's political and economic situation has been deteriorating rapidly over the past year. The government majority in parliament recently passed a law that provides for prison sentences of up to three years for spreading "false" or "misleading" information. Pro-government prosecutors are the ones to decide whether a piece of news is false or misleading."

Also, the German Federal Office of Migration Refugees reports that 16,000 Turks sought asylum in Germany between January and October 2022, an increase of 176%

★ Turkish prosecutors seek a four-year jail term for Istanbul greater Metropolitan mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu.

Istanbulites elected Mr. İmamoğlu as mayor in the 2019 local elections. He is from the opposition Republican peoples party and beat the ruling Justice and development party candidate.

Seeing as a possible challenger to Mr. Erdoğan, the Justice and Development Party administration often harasses him, and holds back funds to Mr. İmamoğlu's city government. In fact, they have even confiscated funds that the municipality had in a bank.

In addition to jail time, prosecutors are also asking for a band from politics for Mr. İmamoğlu.

The prosecutors accuse him of insulting members of Turkey's election board during a speech in November 2019. In his speech Mr. mom all the talked about the board's decision to a novel and rerun the March 31, 2019 election. In the rerun, Mr. İmamoğlu won with a 800,000-votes margin, up from 23,000 from the initial round.

★ Germany's Institute for Foreign Cultural Relations award went to Turkish businessman and philanthropist Osman Kavala, reports Stefan Dege of the Deutsche Welle.

The award is approximately $10,000. However, Mr. Kavala will not be present to accept the prize since he has been in jail since 2017 on trumped up charges. The only reason he is still in jail is because he is in the opposition, analysts say.

Stefan Dege adds that in addition to being an entrepreneur, Mr. Kavala is the patron of the arts and human rights activists. He played an important role in Turkish cultural life over the years.

★ According to the daily Duvar, Turks risk losing Europe's human rights protections if Turkey is removed from the Council of Europe.

The council says that Turkey has failed to implement eight 2019 court ruling to release Mr. Osman Kavala.

If Turkey is removed from the council, the European Court of human rights rulings will not be binding on Turkey.

Nebahat Akkoç says her life began afresh after the European Court of Human Rights ruled in 2000 that she had suffered torture while in Turkish custody, emboldening her and others to carry on their fight for women's rights.

The data indicates that European Court of Human Rights delivered 3,820 judgments regarding Turkey between 1959 and 2021, of which 3,385 included at least one rights violation - the highest of any country. Turkey has the largest population among the 46 member states and signed the Convention before many of them.

Experts say Turkey should not be removed as that would deprive 85 million citizens of a mechanism that has provided restitution for thousands.

The latest ruling by the court is that Turkey had violated the rights of the 13 People's Democratic Party lawmakers by imprisoning them. After the ruling, in a written statement, the People's Democratic Party officials demanded the release of the politicians.

The European Court of Human Rights ordered Turkey to pay a total of 184,600 Euros and 1,000 Euros each for court costs in compensation to lawmakers

The People's Democratic Party is seen by some in Turkey as an extension of the rebel Kurdistan Workers Party. The U.S. and the European Union consider The Kurdistan Workers Party as a terrorist organization.

★ Turkish President Mr. Erdoğan and other officials from his administration and the Justice and development party talk always in negative terms about the pro-Kurdish Peoples Democratic Party. They claim that it is a terrorist organization.

However, on November 2 Justice Minister Bekir Bozdağ and Justice and development party group deputy chair Mustafa Elitaş visited opposition parties at the Turkish parliament including the People's Democratic Party.

They discussed the new constitutional amendment that the ruling Justice and Development Party is preparing on headscarf and family issues.

Many in the opposition, labeled this as hypocrisy, while maligning the People's Democratic Party but at the same time having meetings with its officials.

The Justice and development party parliamentarian Mehmet Ali Cevheri has defended his party's visit by saying that the People's Democratic Party is illegal party and that his party needs its support.

Devlet Bahçeli, the leader of The junior coalition extreme-right Nationalist Movement party, who also talks negatively of the pro-Kurdish party, said on November 18 that talks with them is extremely natural and the right step.

★ Turkey's opposition parties and critics accuse the Turkish statistical Institute of cooking the numbers with inflation and other official data, for political reasons.

The daily Duvar writes that the Institute has dismissed allegations, but independent researchers calculate alternative inflation rates. While the government claimed that the annual inflation rate for October was 86 %, the alternative number was 185 %.

The daily Duvar reported that on November 12, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan dismiss Fatih Şahin , the deputy head of the Turkish statistical Institute. He was just appointed in April. There was no replacement named and the dismissal announcement did not give a reason.

★ On November 8, Turkish energy minister Fatih Dönmez said that Turkey started paying for some of its natural gas purchases from Russia in rubles.

Since Russia is under sanctions, Russia has requested this some months ago.

★ According to Reuters, the Turkish Central Bank is telling top bank executives that it will continue decisively with market regulating policies that have been criticised by the banking sector.

Turkish banks currently enjoy record profits, but analysts expect the new Central Bank measures put into effect will change this next year. One of the measures requires Turkish banks to purchase government bonds which currently have substantially lower yields than the inflation rate.

The new measures by the central bank cover foreign-exchange, bond, loan and deposit markets Reuters rights. Due to these new measures, the 10 year bond yield slipped from 26% to 10.5% recently.
