NEWS

★ According to VOA, Syrian Kurds are accusing Turkey of changing the demographics under Kurdish-Controlled territory in northwestern Syria.

They claim that Turks have settled Turkmens and Arabs in majority Kurdish-held areas.

Turkey controls parts of northern Syria to keep the Syrian Kurds under check. Turkey considers the Syrian Kurdish military aligned with the U. S. affiliated with the rebel Turkish Kurds.

★ According to Deutsche Welle, Turkey on Friday lashed out at Sweden after an effigy of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan was hung upside down from a lamppost in Stockholm during a pro-Kurdish demonstration.

Here is a summary of the article:

Neutral throughout the Cold War, Finland and Sweden applied to join NATO in the aftermath of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. But Turkey objects to the Nordic countries' history of welcoming asylum seekers, many of them Kurds, who Turkey considers terrorists.

NATO members have to approve the membership of Finland and Sweden unanimously. Turkey has asked the two countries to cooperate in returning people it considers terrorists and lifting any arms embargo. If they do not comply, Turkey says it will reject their membership.

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson condemned the effigy incident on Friday. He said that he thought the perpetrators designed it to derail his country's NATO bid.

★ A Turkish court convicted Dr. Şebnem Fincancı, the president of the Turkish Medical Association. Taking the clue from Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, prosecutors accused her of spreading propaganda for terrorists, reports the BBC.

The court sentenced her to nearly three years in jail, but she is eligible for release.

Rights groups say her detention was a bid to silence her and other activists.

Fincancı, a forensic specialist, is a leading human rights activist. Turkish police arrested her when she called for an independent investigation into claims that the military used banned chemical weapons against Kurdish rebels in northern Iraq.

★ The ruling Justice and Development Party would like to see Istanbul Metropolitan Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu disappear.

Wresting the mayoralty from the Justice and Development Party in the 2018 local elections, Turkish President Mr. Erdoğan sees him as a potential rival in this year's presidential election. To eliminate Mr. İmamoğlu from challenging him, President Erdoğan is coaxing supposedly-independent courts to try him on various trumped-up charges.

This week, Mr. Erdoğan's administration filed another lawsuit against Mr. İmamoğlu, claiming he was involved in a bid-rigging in a 2015 tender. The charge carries a sentence of up to seven years, reports the Turkish news outlet Habertürk.

★ Speaking of upcoming elections, the Turkish daily Duvar reports that mayors from the main opposition Republican People's Party, Ekrem İmamoğlu and Ankara Metropolitan Mayor Mansur Yavaş, are leading against President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

A recent survey by private pollster ORC Research revealed the results, reports the daily Duvar.

Opposition right-wing Good Party leader Meral Akşener also beat Erdoğan for his office, whereas Republican People's Party leader Kılıçdaroğlu fell behind Erdoğan.

  Here are the poll results:

★ According to Reuters, Şakir Özkan Torunlar, Turkey's new ambassador to Israel, visited Israeli president Isaac Herzog.

President Herzog told ambassador Torunlar that he would like to have Turkey's president Erdoğan visit Israel.

Since 2008, the two countries were not on good terms and did not have ambassadors exchanged. Before that, the two countries were close allies.

Finding himself an outsider and the Turkish economy in shambles, Turkey's president Erdoğan decided to mend its bad relations with neighbors, including Israel, resulting in the exchange of ambassadors.

President Erdoğan received Irit Lillian, Israel's new ambassador to Turkey, on December 27.

★ On January 12, Paul Iddon of Forbes wrote that the prototype of Turkey's home-grown Stealth Fighter jet TF-X would fly this year, the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the Republic of Turkey.

Iddon wrote that even if Turkey could fly the fighter, there would be many years of work before it could make a truly fifth-generation aircraft or even a fully functional prototype.

★ According to Jack Detsch of the Foreign Policy magazine, Turkey is sending Cold War-era cluster bombs to Ukraine.

The artillery-fired cluster munitions could be lethal to Russian troops-and Ukrainian civilians.

Turkey had made the munitions on a direct co-production agreement with the United States.

The article writes that shipping these munitions is a reversal of policy for Turkey. In 2021 Turkey pledged to the international disarmament community that it would not use cluster munitions.

The article also says the following about the Turkish policy in the Russia-Ukraine war:

"President Erdoğan kept a consistent policy to the war, experts said. He has acted as an economic friend to the Kremlin while allying with other Black Sea states and fellow NATO members militarily against Russia."

★ According to Shephard News, which provides defense-related information, Turkey is testing a domestically-made surface-to-air missile system. The system could replace the Russian S-400 system that Turkey acquired controversially.

The U. S. sanctioned Turkey for purchasing the Russian system. One of the sanctions was the expulsion of Turkey from the F-35 joint fighter program. Turkey originally wanted to buy 100 F-35s but is barred from acquiring them.

★ On Tuesday, a Turkish court ruled that police used disproportionate force against Agence France-Presse photojournalist Bülent Kılıç during the LGBTQ Pride March in Istanbul in 2021.

The judge ordered the state to pay 30,000 Turkish liras in compensation.

During the March, police surrounded him, took him down, and pressed their knees onto his back. Kılıç shouted "I cannot breathe," much like African-American Eric Garner in 2014.

After the defeat of the Ottomans, Germany, and other allies, British, French, Italian, and Greek forces occupied the Ottoman capital Istanbul.

The introduction to the exhibition on its website writes the following:

"Istanbul was in flux, not only politically but also socially and culturally. Residents of the city witnessed and participated in mass demonstrations to protest against violence and occupation, strikes that paralyzed trams, ferries, and gasworks in the hope of better pay and conditions; dawn raids on officers and officials accused of wartime crimes or defiance of the Allies or sultan; the detention and search of cafe-goers for weapons and banned literature; brawls between Allied servicemen and civilians in bars and brothels; and assassinations, lynchings, and abductions by armed bands. Amidst the upheaval, people continued to strive to better others' lives and their own. Schools, institutions, and community organizations were opened; concerts and exhibitions held with the contribution of diverse talents and patrons; new political, literary, and artistic ideas enlivened the pages of a flourishing press; and charities raised funds for the support of refugees, wounded veterans, orphans, and the city's poor."
