NEWS

★ According to Begum Dönmez Ersöz of the VOA, as the administration of U.S. President Joe Biden seeks to secure NATO enlargement with the accession of Sweden and Finland, it is dealing with requests by Turkey and Greece to purchase fighter jets, the latter being less controversial and more likely to be approved.

Here is a summary of Ms. Ersöz's article:

Analysts speaking to VOA said the outcome of the proposed sale of F-16s to Turkey and F-35s to Greece would impact the two neighbors' air defense capabilities and the regional power balance.

After purchasing Russian-made S-400 air defense missiles from Russia, three years ago, the U. S. removed Turkey from the F-35 design and manufacturing program. The U.S. and NATO officials say that the Russian missile system could spy on the F-35 jets and send the information to Russia.

In addition, the U.S. blocked Turkey from purchasing 100 F-35 Jets.

Now Turkey wants 40 advanced versions of F-16 block 70 fighters and 80 upgrade kits for the existing Turkish F-16s.

The Senate opposes the sale since Turkey is blocking Finland and Sweden's membership in NATO and close relationship with Russia.

Analysts expect Turkey's attitude will be more compromising after the Turkish elections in midyear.

★ As the presidential and parliamentary elections are getting close, the atmosphere in Turkey is getting charged.

According to VOA correspondent Dorian Jones, one contributing factor is the ruling Justice and Development Party's use of the judiciary to mete out court rulings to undermine the opposition.

Although the judiciary is supposed to be independent in Turkey, for many years, Mr. Erdoğan and his party have been openly pulling the strings of the judges and the courts.

Two such rulings may come from the courts in the coming weeks: one may close the pro-Kurdish Peoples Democratic Party. The party is in the opposition and the third-largest in the parliament. If the constitutional court disbands it, Mr. Erdoğan's party may increase the seats in the parliament.

Another ruling may come from a higher court when it approves a lower court's decision to ban Mr. Ekrem İmamoğlu, the popular Istanbul mayor, from politics and jail him. Analysts see him as a potential candidate who can beat Mr. Erdoğan at the polls.

★ According to the daily Duvar, The Table of Six, leaders of Turkey's six opposition parties, on January 26, met for the eleventh time.

"Table of Six" is the name of an alliance of the six opposition parties that are united to change Turkey's presidential regime to "strengthen the parliamentary system", consisting of the main opposition Republican People's Party, center-right Good Party, Islamist Felicity Party, Democrat Party, Democracy and Progress Party, and Future Party.

The opposition leaders released a statement after the meeting at the Good Party headquarters. They said that they discussed how to choose a joint-presidential candidate.

"Turkey's 13th President will be the candidate of the Nation Alliance," they added, referring to six parties as Nation Alliance for the first time.

They also said President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan could not "constitutionally" run for office for a third time unless parliament decides to call an early election.

Erdoğan became president for the first time in the presidential elections held in 2014.

He later took office as the first president of the new executive presidential system in the elections held in June 2018. Under the new system, a person can be a president at most two times.

★ After Danish far-right politician Rasmus Paludan's burning of the Koran in front of the Turkish Embassy in Stockholm, Western countries are warning their citizens about possible terror attacks.

On January 27, U. S., French, and German embassies in Turkey warned their citizens.

The U. S. Embassy web pages we reached said the following:

" In the wake of recent Quran-burning incidents in Europe, the U. S. government cautions its citizens of possible retaliatory attacks by terrorists against places of worship in Turkey. Terrorists could attack with little or no warning, targeting places of worship or places Westerners frequent."

The Embassy also had a list of actions to take, including staying alert in locations frequented by Westerners and avoiding crowds.

★ According to Deutsche Welle, young Russians who refused to fight in Ukraine have fled to Istanbul since Moscow announced its partial military mobilization in September.

A Deutsche Welle correspondent interviewed two young men. In the beginning, the two men found Istanbul chaotic, but now they enjoy living in the city.

According to Turkish sources, there are 150,000 Russian citizens in Turkey with residency permits, 37,000 of them in Istanbul.

Now, Russian concert posters and graffiti are commonplace in Istanbul.

TotamTotut, a counseling company, helps Russian migrants with housing, residency permit applications, and integration via Telegram groups.

★ According to a report by National Public Radio, Turkish families are struggling with soaring prices, and many find themselves forced to give up some of their usual winter pleasures.

Istanbul Correspondent Peter Kenyon reports that one can see a sign of this at Istanbul's Turkish baths, where employees say many of their customers are staying away this year.

This time of year is when hammams rely on their Turkish customers, but a hammam operator Cenuk says this winter that's a problem for families trying to make ends meet as prices for food, rent, and other basics remain very high.

★ According to the Street Insider website, Turkey is the world's top destination for hair transplants, with affordable prices and high-quality care.

The article says there are the following reasons why Turkish clinics are attractive:

Affordable prices: surgeries in Turkey cost from $2200-$7600. In the U. S., the same would be $11,500-$16,000.

High-quality care: patients in Turkey not only get a hair transplant, but the clinics take care of private transportation from the airport to the hotel, a hotel room with five or four stars, pre-op consultation, remote pos-top care, and a personal translator.

Tourism: patients can also take the opportunity to visit some of the world-famous tourist attractions while in Istanbul.
