NEWS

★ According to VOA, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy is visiting Istanbul Friday for talks with his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on the course of Ukraine's war with Russia, the Black Sea grain deal, and regarding the release of Ukrainian POWs and political prisoners held by the Russian state, according to Zelenskiy's office and Turkish media.

Throughout the two-year war between Ukraine and Russia, Turkey, a NATO member, has sought to maintain cordial diplomatic relations with both countries and is expected to urge peace negotiations between the two foes.

Last week, Turkish Foreign Affairs Minister Hakan Fidan urged Ukraine and Russia to begin cease-fire talks after meeting with Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov and added that such talks must not mean the recognition of Russia's occupation.

Zelenskiy's visit to Turkey comes before a planned visit there by Russian President Vladimir Putin, which the Kremlin said would be after Russian elections on March 15-17.

According to Reuters, after the visit, President Erdoğan said he was ready to host a summit between Ukraine and Russia to end the war.

★ Palestinian President Abbas visited Turkey this week. After his meeting, Turkish President Erdoğan and Abbas had a joint press conference.

President Erdoğan strongly condemned Israel's actions in Palestine. He also criticized the Biden administration.

★ Reuters wrote that disunity among Turkey's opposition may enable the ruling Justice and Development Party to take back the mayoralty of metropolitan Istanbul in the local elections on March 31.

In the 2019 elections, Mr. Ekrem İmamoğlu, the current mayor, wrested the mayoralty from the Justice and Development Party after a repeat of the election and winning by a much wider margin.

In 2019, after taking his position, Mayor İmamoğlu said that the previous administration used the coffers of metropolitan Istanbul to support conservative organizations and religious endowments to the tune of millions of dollars.

A pollster said if İmamoğlu wins this election, he will be the next president of Turkey.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is also the head of the Justice and Development Party. He acts as if he is the one who is running for office and personally campaigns for candidates from his party.

According to the daily Duvar, on March 8, he spoke at a meeting of Turkey Youth Foundation, a pro-Justice and Development Party organization, and stated that "this is his last election for me 'as authorized by law.'"

He added, "The [election] outcome will be a transfer of trust for my brothers who will come after me."

★ According to the daily Duvar, Istanbul residents will get a 40 in-long ballot paper in the March 31 local elections.

The megacity has the longest ballot in the country, with 22 political parties and 27 independent candidates for the metropolitan municipality vote.

The shortest ballot will be 1.8" long for a race with only one candidate from the Justice and Development Party for the Hilal township in the eastern Şırnak province.

★ According to Bianet, the March 8 Women's Labor Report prepared by Genel-İş, a Turkish labor union under the umbrella of the Revolutionary Worker's Union of Turkey, highlights that women are squeezed between the roles of "cheap labor" and "sanctified motherhood" in Turkey.

Some of the highlights from the report are:    The report recommended that employers should abandon all discrimination against women in the workplace and make efforts to end flexible working arrangements, gender-based division of labor, and wage inequality. They should create Secure and regular employment opportunities.

★ The European Court of Human Rights has ruled on the case of a Turkish computer engineer fired for criticizing his employer.

The engineer, who claimed his employer dismissed him following a strongly critical email directed at the manager and company management, took the matter to court after exhausting domestic legal avenues that ruled against him.

Having reached the end of legal recourse within Turkey, the engineer brought the case to the European Court of Human Rights.

★ Turkey's Constitutional Court declared that the international travel ban imposed on human rights activist Nurcan Kaya violated her freedom of expression, the Media and Law Studies Association announced on March 6.

According to Veysel Ok, co-director of the Association, this ruling sets a precedent for judges to consider when imposing judicial control measures, such as travel bans.

★ March 8 was the Women's Day. According to Turkish news outlet Bianet, despite obstacles, Turkish women took to the streets to rally and protest.

In Istanbul, police prevented a group of women numbering thousands from reaching the iconic Taksim Square. The crowd dissolved around 10 PM on a rainy and cold Istanbul day.

According to the Turkish daily Duvar, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan attended the Women's Day Program in Istanbul prepared by the Family and Social Services Ministry.

In a speech, Mr. Erdoğan brought up his unusual emphasis on family. He deemed all stances that "sought to detach the woman from the family" dangerous.

Rehashing a common talking point when it comes to women and the LGBT, Mr. Erdoğan criticized feminist organizations for "not speaking against the abolishment of gender."

He concluded his speech by asking for strong support for his Justice and Development Party in the upcoming local elections on March 31.

★ BAMF, The German Federal Office for Migration and Refugees, reports that the number of Turkish asylum applicants in Germany increased by 12.3% to 7649 in the first two months of 2024 compared to last year. However, the total number decreased by 13%.

According to the Turkish service of Deutsche Welle, Turkey is the third on the list, following Syria and Afghanistan, which constitute 60% of the applicants.

BAMF data shows that Germany accepted 45% of the asylum applications. The rate for Turkish applicants was only 7.8%.

★ ECONOMY

★ VOA reports that Somalia and Turkey have announced the signing of a deal to explore oil and gas that further strengthens cooperation between the two, according to officials from both countries.

Under the agreement signed Thursday in Turkey, the deal is to promote the development of bilateral, scientific, technical, and commercial cooperation between Turkey and Somalia in developing the oil and gas of Somalia, according to Somali Petroleum and Mineral Resources Minister Abdirizak Mohamed.

★ According to the state-run Turkish Statistical Institute, the consumer inflation rate for February was 67%, with the highest in food at 71.2%, the daily Duvar reports.

However, data from ENAG, the independent inflation research group, showed that the increase reached 122%.

For February alone, the Institute's figures were 4.53%, whereas, surprisingly, ENAG's was 4.32%.

According to ENAG, the lowest monthly increase was in health, 0%, and the highest was in miscellaneous goods and services, 10.49%.

★ In a significant move to bolster the cultural heritage of the ancient city of Pergamon, Turkey has earmarked a budget of $32.2 million to enhance its national and international prominence, announced Culture and Tourism Minister Mehmet Nuri Ersoy.

Mr. Ersoy said the objective is to expedite the excavation and preservation of cultural assets, particularly ancient cities, to unveil their historical significance at the earliest opportunity.

Pergamon is a quintessential example of Hellenistic urban planning, boasting monumental architecture that epitomizes the era's grandeur. Ersoy highlighted iconic structures such as the Temple of Athena, theater, library, temples of Zeus and Dionysus, agora, and gymnasium as prime exemplars of the period's architectural prowess.

In addition to infrastructure improvements, the government allocated a separate budget for the repair, exhibition, and arrangement of the Pergamon Archaeological Museum, with plans for immediate commencement of work.

★ Excavations at the Claros Sanctuary stand as the enduring legacy of Ege University's Archaeology Department, according to Professor Onur Zunal, who leads the excavation efforts.

He added that these excavations unearthed artifacts and illuminated the historical significance of Claros as a center of prophecy in antiquity .

The Claros Sanctuary, situated within the Turkish province of İzmir's Menderes neighborhood, holds a paramount position as one of Ionia's most sacred sites and the oldest oracle center, affirmed by the extensive excavations conducted over time.

According to Prof. Zunal, the first work there began in 1886 by Carl Schuchhardt with a survey. In 1907, Theodor Macridy conducted the first dig. Between 1950 and 1961, Loius Robert and Jeanne Robert conducted significant excavations, followed by Juliette de La Genière's endeavors from 1988 to 1997. Since 2001, the Ege University team has continued to reveal what is beneath the surface.

★ Archaeologists discovered an oven structure and about 8,600-year-old bread at Çatalhöyük, a Neolithic settlement in central Turkey.

Çatalhöyük is one of the first human proto-cities built. Full of densely packed mud brick houses covered in paintings and symbolic decorations, its population hovered around 8,000. That made it one of the largest settlements of its era, somewhere between an outsized village and a tiny city. People entered mud-brick homes through ceiling doors and navigated sidewalks around the city's rooftops.

Analyses conducted at Necmettin Erbakan University Science and Technology Research and Application Center determined that the spongy residue was fermented bread from 6600 BCE.

★ Turkish authorities are about to complete the renovation of a church built into the rocks in Eğil district of southeastern Diyarbakır province. Crosses adorn the church walls, and one has fossils of sand dollars, a type of sea urchin.

There are five holes in a sand dollar – four around the ends of the star and one in the center. According to the religious legend, the four holes represent the four wounds of Christ when they nailed his hands and feet to the cross. The center hole represents the wound made from a soldier's spear.

The Eğil district has become a hub for cultural and religious visitors, captivating them with attractions such as the Assyrian fortress, where a legend says ancients buried prophets Ezekiel and Elisha, the King's Daughter Dam Lake, and ancient wall cisterns.

The renovations in the area started two years ago under the direction of Prof. Vecihi Özkaya, a faculty member of the Department of Archaeology at Dicle University, and they are continuing.

The renovation team first repaired two of the four ancient tunnels in the fortress and opened them to visitors. So far, they completed 80% of the renovation work for the 1600-year-old church.

The rock church is part of the Assyrian Mor Yuhanna Monastery, named after John of Ephesus.

Dr. Özkaya says the ancients formed the church by combining two possibly prehistoric rock tombs.

As part of the renovation project, the team also repaired the road leading to the church for guests to travel easily.

★ According to the website Arkeolojik Haber, the longest archaeological dig in Anatolia, Turkey's Asiatic part, has been the excavations performed during the construction of TANAP, the Trans-Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline.

The portion of the pipeline within the borders of Turkey is 1125 miles, and it carries gas from Azerbaijan to Turkey for export to Europe. It passes through 20 provinces of Turkey, which hosted many civilizations in history.

According to the TANAP site, during the five-year construction period, crews identified 48 archaeological sites and recovered around 1,000 artifacts. Many of the areas are now under preservation.

Among them is the Aleybeyi site, which turned out to be the oldest settlement identified to date in the Northeast Anatolia region. Also, the Karaz Mound in Erzurum province revealed a settlement going back 4000 years ago.

On January 15, 2020, TANAP turned over the artifacts found to the Bandırma Museum, where an exhibition hall displays them.
