NEWS

★ In an analysis, Dr. Soner Çagaptay said March 31st local elections in Istanbul will shape Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's policy trajectory.

Istanbul is the country's economic, financial, and cultural capital and stands out as the grand prize in the race. The Metropolitan mayor is from the opposition.

Dr. Soner Çagaptay added: "If the president's faction takes the city back from the opposition on March 31, he may feel comfortable enough to focus on more positive legacy-building steps, but a loss could see him double down on nativist and populist policies at home and abroad. "

Analysts say there is a weak candidate for Istanbul and other locations in the country. In some of these locations, President Erdoğan is stepping in and campaigning for them.

Dr. Çagaptay writes that if President Erdoğan's party defeats the opposition as it did in the 2023 parliamentary and presidential elections, some of the things he may do are:

Restart the dialogue with the Turkish Kurds.

Embrace a more internationalist role in foreign policy:

Develop resets with the United States regarding Syria, just as he did recently with neighbors like Greece.

On the other hand, if Ekrem İmamoğlu, the current mayor and opposition candidate for the local elections, wins again in Istanbul, it would catapult him as a politician who could challenge Erdoğan.

Dr. Çagaptay is the director of the Turkish research program at the Washington Institute.

★ According to an analysis by the Turkish daily Duvar, Murat Kurum, the Justice and Development Party Istanbul mayoral candidate, needed to stay in office for 160 years to fulfill promises.

Among them, they cited his promise to build 650,000 new homes that would withstand earthquakes. In the past five years, the Justice and Development Party led efforts only had 20,000 homes built in Istanbul, the daily adds.

★ Newsweek carried an article by Joshua Lefkowitz titled "Turkey Hosts the World's Largest Refugee Population. Why Isn't Migration a Big-Ticket Issue in Municipal Elections?"

He says, "The migration debate in Turkey is relatively new as compared to other countries but appears to be disappearing from the public discussion after reaching a breaking point in the 2023 elections. Turkish voters are paralyzed by the economic crisis. And with the government keeping a tight lid on migration, voters don't see how any mainstream parties will change the status quo anytime soon."

★ According to a new study investigating how the climate crisis will affect the suitability of vineyard areas for grape production in Turkey, expected temperature increases and decreased rainfall over the next 30 years could alter favorable conditions in grape-producing regions, reports the Turkish news site Bianet.

The study suggests that the anticipated temperature extremes, changes in rainfall patterns, and drought expected in the coming period could adversely affect viticulture activities.

For example, yields will decrease in Manisa and Denizli provinces, which account for approximately half of Turkey's total grape production, where Sultana grapes grow.

On the other hand, climate and agriculture experts predict that the suitable conditions for Sultana grapes could shift to the inland areas of the Western Black Sea and the western part of Eastern Anatolia.

Similarly, the experts anticipate that the coastal and inland areas of the Aegean Region will become more suitable for varieties requiring high temperatures, such as Boğazkere, Öküzgözü, and Şire.

★ The Turkish daily Duvar reports that climate change is affecting the behavior of the Kangals, renowned Turkish Shepherd dogs.

Kangal dogs grew into their winter coats late due to the lack of snowfall, and could not enter the mating season in January and waited until March.

A Kangal dog association in Turkey's Sivas province said the temperatures affected the dogs' hormones.

★ March 21 was Single Parent Day, and Bianet, a Turkish news site, reported on Turkey's Single Mothers Association.

It all started in November 2022 when Serap Yelkenci shared the challenges of being a single mother on her social media account. Fifty women reached out to her, and later numbers grew. Finally, on March 18, they formed an association.

On March 18, at a meeting that announced the establishment of the Association, Serap Yelkenci said:

The goal of the Association is to contribute to the struggle for gender equality.

The inspiration for the Association's logo came from the octopus. A single mother is like an octopus trying to juggle everything: bringing up the child, work, and household duties.

According to estimates, there are 3 1/2 million single mothers in Turkey.

★ On March 21, in a surprise move, the Turkish central bank increased the policy interest rate to 50% from 45. Earlier, economists predicted that the bank would keep the interest rate constant in March due to the upcoming local elections.

Following the increased rate announcement, the U. S. dollar dropped from 32.41 Turkish liras to 31.96. However, later, it rose again.

In the past, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan intervened and fired the central bank chiefs who tried to fight inflation by raising rates. Contrary to economists' advice, Mr. Erdoğan believed that the interest rates should be low to reduce inflation.

However, when his policies did not work and the inflation skyrocketed, Mr. Erdoğan made a U-turn and appointed an economic administration that discarded his unorthodox policy.

★ According to Agence France-Presse, high inflation in Turkey dampened Ramadan's high spirits.

Many Turks rely on local authorities for free meals.

Turkish officials put the interest rate at 67% in February. However, an independent research group calculated it as 122%.

★ According to the Turkish daily Dünya, the Exemplary Homes Living Village project started with the initiative of an interior architect who asked, "What can I do for the earthquake zone?" one day after the February 2023 Turkish earthquakes.

With the gathering of more than 4000 volunteers and hundreds of companies at the Tüyap Fair Center in Istanbul, the project came to life and was a ray of hope for the survivors of the earthquake.

Zülal Çakıcı, Hamide Göksan, and their team led the development of the village on a 16-acre land in the city of Antakya in Turkey's southern province of Hatay.

The village filled an empty land with 100 tiny houses with hundreds of people, trees, bird nests, space, and hope.

Fifty homes are 165 sq. ft., and the other fifty have mezzanines and are 220 ft.².

They all have wood siding, kitchens, bathrooms, and furniture.

Thanks to open land around them, after being set up at a permanent location, families who moved in, built additional sections and expanded the floorspace of the homes.

Project officials say that they gave priority to women with children who lost their spouses, pregnant women and those who have just given birth, the elderly, the disabled, and those with chronic diseases. However, they also allocated houses in the village to healthy and working people to ensure sustainable life here and community solidarity.

There are still things to do in the village and a need for more homes. To raise funds for the additional work, an exhibition called "The Effects of Butterfly" is taking place at the culture center in Istanbul's Beşiktaş district. Haldun Dostoğlu, the founder of the Gallery Nev in Istanbul, is helping with the effort.

The exhibition will be on through March 24.

She wrote, "The accolades were announced at a prestigious ceremony in Greece, organized by Hermes, Air Transport News, and a bunch of industry bodies like Airports Council International and the International Air Transport Association."

★ The British daily The Times had an article about the Pera Palace Hotel in Istanbul, calling It is glamorous and steeped in the city's history

It said the opulent grand dame is renowned for its glittering clientele, grandiose interiors, and spectacular afternoon teas, a legacy of its English clientele that included British King Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson, his American-born wife,

Among the guests was Agatha Christie, who wrote parts of Murder on the Orient Express there, and the hotel named its restaurant after her.

The Times adds that Pera Palace is close to the vibrant Beyoglu neighborhood of Istanbul, with many cafés, bars, and art galleries.

★ "Tortoise Trainer," Ottoman painter Osman Hamdi Bey's second work with the same name, is now in the permanent exhibition "Watching Turkish Painting" at Türkiye İş Bankası Painting and Sculpture Museum.

In the 1907 work, there are six turtles, unlike the five turtles in the other painting painted the previous year.

In the place, which is understood to be a room of the Bursa Green Mosque built by Çelebi Sultan Mehmed (reign 1413-1421), the line "Şifa'al-kulûb lika'al Mahbub," meaning "The healing of hearts is to reunite with the beloved (Prophet Muhammad)" can be seen.

Next to it, unlike the other painting, a plate that says "Muhammad" hangs, and the Çanakkale jug with green dripping on white and standing in the niche is also unique to this painting.

Founding curator of Türkiye İş Bankası Painting and Sculpture Museum, Prof. Dr. Gül İrepoğlu evaluates the work as follows:

"The painting signed and dated by Osman Hamdi Bey, who we can describe as the only orientalist painter and can look at our culture from inside, to his grandson Mahmud Münir Pasha in French, "a souvenir with love," is a reflection of the intellectual artist's broad imagination and universal inspirations."

A work by Neshat in the exhibition

★ Istanbul's Dirimart hosts the exhibition of Iranian artist Shirin Neshat's latest body of work, The Fury, comprising a double-channel video installation and a series of black-and-white photographs.

Shot in June 2022, The Fury seeks to capture the Zeitgeist: a sense of foreboding and dread sparked by the resurgence of fascism we are witnessing.

In a highly fictionalized and stylized way, Neshat's new video installation addresses the sexual exploitation of women as political prisoners in Iran.

The Fury will be on display at Dirimart Pera from March 14-April 7.

★ There is a new exhibition at Istanbul's Arter titled GLOSSOLALALA, showcasing individual works by Johanna Gustafsson Fürst and Dilek Winchester, crafted in diverse locations and mediums.

Central to the exhibition is the exploration of language, with the displayed works bridging language through sound, text, body, and space.

★ The launch of the "Museum by Night" project, aimed at offering visitors a unique experience of Turkey's historical sites and cultural heritage under the night sky, took place on March 8 at the Pamukkale Hierapolis ancient city in Turkey's Western province of Denizli.

Professor Celal Şimşek, head of the Pamukkale University's Archaeology Department and coordinator of Hierapolis excavation and restoration, emphasized the unparalleled fusion of natural travertines and archaeological wonders at the site.

Discussing the restoration efforts undertaken in the Chamber of Holy Relics and the significance of the artifacts on display, Yasin Yıldız, President of the National Palaces Department, emphasized the chamber's importance as the heart of Topkapı Palace for both local and foreign visitors. Previously, only a few select individuals among the palace residents could see the relics.

★ The legal battle initiated by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality regarding the transfer of ownership of Taksim Gezi Park to the Sultan Bayezid Foundation has finally concluded, reports the ArtDog Istanbul magazine.

Taksim Gezi Park is a small urban park in the Beyoğlu district of Istanbul, next to Taksim Square. It is one of the few remaining green spaces in the area.

In 2013, plans to demolish the park and replace it with a shopping mall and a reconstruction of the former Taksim Military Barracks, destroyed in 1940, sparked nationwide protests in Turkey.

Gezi Park, transferred to the Sultan Beyazıt Hanı Veli Hazretleri Foundation by the General Directorate of Foundations three years ago, is now back in the ownership of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality due to a recent court decision. The Istanbul 1st Civil Court of First Instance made the decision. If the appellate and supreme courts uphold it, the İstanbul Metropolitan Municipality will be the sole owner of Gezi Park.
