Some of the ancient sites that visitors were in record numbers.

★ Turkey was in holiday mode most of this week, celebrating the end of Ramadan. Most people started their holiday time off on Monday, April 8, and will report back to work on the 15th.

Taking advantage of the nine-day holiday, the daily Duvar reported that domestic tourists flocked to historic and scenic locations. In Istanbul, the İstiklal Avenue and Prince Islands were popular destinations.

The ancient sites of Göbeklitepe and Zeugma in southeastern Turkey hosted record visitors.

★ Writing in the American Conservative, Gökhan Çınkara, a professor at Turkey's Necmettin Erbakan University, said: "The 2024 local elections in Turkey have emerged as a watershed moment for the nation's conservative and nationalist factions, indicating a tectonic shift in the political landscape that may have profound implications for the country's future."

The right-wing coalition between the Justice and Development and Nationalist Action parties suffered defeat.

The New Welfare Party aside, other right-wing parties faced the same fate.

Dr. Çınkara adds that the prevailing theory suggests that the electorate aimed to send a stern message to the ruling elite due to the country's economic downturn.

He suggested that Turkish conservatives foster ties with their American counterparts to rejuvenate Turkey's conservative movement.

★ According to the British daily The Guardian, a support pylon collapsed in a cable car system between Antalya city and a mountain, killing one person, injuring seven, and stranding one eighty-four in mid-air.

Emergency crews with 110 people arrived at the scene to rescue the wounded and stranded.

Ten opposition parliamentarians went to Antalya to investigate the accident. Muhittin Böcek, Antalya Metropolitan Mayor, addressed the claims that lack of maintenance may have been the problem. He said the company running the cable car is supposed to conduct annual major and weekly maintenance. He says there will be an investigation.

★ Deutsche Welle says allies started increasing the pressure on Israel. It added that Turkey also joined.

On Tuesday, Turkish officials banned the export of 54 categories of products to Israel. The ban came after many months of protests by the public of the ruling Justice and Development Party, especially by the religious.

Turkey's Trade Ministry said it had stopped earlier sending any goods to Israel that it could use for military purposes.

A Voice of America article said that tensions between Israel and Turkey over the war in Gaza may escalate into an all-out trade war, threatening a bilateral economic relationship that the two sides have long nurtured even as the countries bickered over political issues.

Israeli Foreign Minister Katz said he asked "Israel's friends in the U. S. Congress to examine Turkish violation of boycott laws against Israel and impose sanctions accordingly."

Eugene Kontorovich, a law professor at George Mason University's Scalia Law School, said he thought Turkey's action "most probably violates the World Trade Organization's agreements," but not U. S. federal laws.

★ According to Turkish news site Bianet, in 2019, the European Court of Human Rights ruled that Osman Kavala's detention violated his rights, ordering his immediate release.

Bianet defines Mr. Osman Kavala as a Turkish businessman and a human rights defender. The Turkish government accused him of many things and finally decided to prosecute him with the trumped-up charges of orchestrating the 2016 failed coup.

After Turkey refused to comply with the ruling, the Council of Europe's Committee of Ministers initiated an infringement process against Turkey in 2022.

In its annual report this week, the Council warned that Turkey's non-compliance with the European Court of Human Rights for the immediate release of Osman Kavala presents a significant challenge to the European human rights system.

She wrote: "Destinations like Paris and Rome tend to get all the credit when it comes to romance - but Istanbul should not be overlooked as a love-fueled city. The historical charm and confluence of cultures give Istanbul a mysterious allure that lends itself incredibly well to date night."

Here are the five places she listed:

★ Turkey's ruling Justice and Development Party has lost Istanbul's Beyoğlu District Municipality for the first time after 20 years. Taksim shopkeepers, who will organize a festival on April 13, talked about the neighborhood's transformation, interventions in the culture of life, and their demands from the new Republican People's Party administration.

The Beyoğlu district has historic buildings, a culture of life, and 24-hour venues. The shopkeepers on and near Beyoğlu's İstiklal Street and Taksim Square supported İnan Güney, the opposition Republican People's Party mayoral candidate, in the March 31 local elections since the religiously conservative Justice and Development Party administrations made life very difficult for them, especially for bars, taverns, and restaurants that served alcohol.

The shopkeepers, restaurateurs, and entertainment venue owners prepared a brochure for the election titled "Why do we support İnan Güney?"

The brochure said that Mr. Güney promised to stop intimidating the shopkeepers with astronomical fees for occupation, and administrative fines, and support the re-establishment of cultural centers such as theaters, movie theaters, and libraries, which historically constituted the dynamics of the neighborhood, and identified with Taksim.

Mr. Güney received 49.22% of the votes and his ruling party opponent 40.74%.

Taksim Shopkeepers Initiative will organize a festival on April 13 between 8.30 p.m. and 10.30 p.m. with the slogan "Beyoğlu Again" after the candidate it supported won. They invited Mayor İnan Güney also to the festival.

★ There is a tulip Museum in Istanbul. The museum will have the Tulipomania featuring 200 works by 55 artists and designers.

In the 1600s, a tulip craze started in Europe after the Dutch got the flowers from the Ottoman Empire and introduced them to Europe. The price of one bulb of tulip went as high as the cost of a home.

Ali Bakova, the exhibition curator, said that the tulip has a special and important place in both the East and the West.

Austrian diplomat Ogier Ghislain de Busbecq admired the tulip after visiting the garden of Suleiman the Magnificent.

Bakova added: "The world's first stock exchange came to being on tulips in the Netherlands."

★ This year, Alaçatı Herb Festival will be between April 18 and 21.

The 13th edition of the festival will be a venue for visitors to discover the natural and cultural heritage of the Aegean region of Turkey, says Mayor Lal Denizli of Çeşme district where Alaçatı is.
