NEWS

★ On December 22, Hakan Fidan, Turkey's Foreign Affairs Minister, met with Syria's de facto leader Ahmed al Sharaa in Damascus.

After the meeting, Fidan said there was no room for Kurdish militants in Syria's future, calling for the SDF militia to disband.

Turkey considers the SDF militia to be an extension of the Kurdistan Workers Party, a rebel Turkish Kurdish group, considered a terrorist organization by the U.S., the European Union, and Turkey.

Turkish-backed fighters and SDF are currently fighting for control of northern Syria.

Hakan Fidan was the first foreign affairs minister of a foreign country to visit Syria after the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad.

★ The Justice and Development Party-led administration said it would allow parliaments pro-Kurdish People's Equality and Democracy Party to hold face-to-face talks with Abdullah Öcalan, Kurdistan Workers Party's jailed leader.

Öcalan is currently in prison on an island off the Istanbul coast.

The People's Equality and Democracy Party said that weather permitting, the visit with Öcalan will take place soon.

★ According to the daily Duvar, SADAT, a self-described Turkish "defense consultant," announced that a court seized assets of Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, the former leader of the Republican People's Party, after he lost a 1-million-lira defamation lawsuit.

The case followed Kılıçdaroğlu's 2022 claims that SADAT was a "paramilitary group" training "terrorists."

The SADAT statement claimed authorities seized Kılıçdaroğlu's assets, claims from ongoing lawsuits, and all bank accounts through legal enforcement after he failed to pay the compensation within 1.5 years.

Adnan Tanrıverdi, a former Turkish brigadier general expelled from the military in 1996 because of his suspicious Islamist activities, established SADAT in 2012.

Tanrıverdi served as an adviser to Erdoğan before being forced to resign from his post in January 2020 after telling a religious conference that SADAT was paving the way for the coming of the Mahdi, a messianic figure some Muslims believe will redeem mankind before the world ends.

The organization allegedly transported weapons to the radical Islamist terrorist organization al-Nusra in Syria and defines itself as "a company that provides consultancy and military training in the field of defense."

★ According to the Turkish daily Duvar, the Union of Municipalities of Turkey will visit Syria under Istanbul mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu's leadership.

Mayor İmamoğlu is from the opposition Republican People's Party.

In Syria, Mayor İmamoğlu says they will assess the needs of Damascus.

After the Union of Municipalities of Turkey executive committee meeting, Mayor İmamoğlu announced the Syrian visit on December 27.

★ According to the Turkish online news outlet Bianet, there was an explosion in an ammunition factory in Turkey's Northwestern province of Balıkesir.

The explosion killed 11 people and wounded three.

★ With a presidential decree, Erdoğan founded the Family Institute and Population Policies Board following concerns over the declining fertility rate in Turkey.

Erdoğan has been a vocal promoter of "family values," encouraging families to have more children while targeting the LGBTI+ community y.

According to Turkish Statistical Institute data, the fertility rate declined to 1.51 in 2023, below the population replacement level of 2.10.

ECONOMY

★ According to the Associated Press, Turkey's soaring costs created a "lost generation" of children.

Here is a summary of the article:

Persistently high inflation, triggered by currency depreciation and unconventional economic policies that President Recep Tayyip Erdogan pursued but later abandoned, has left many families struggling to pay for food and housing.

Associated Press writes that inflation was 47 percent in 2024, quoting the official number. However, independent economists calculate it as around 87 percent.

Experts say it's creating a lost generation of children forced to grow up too quickly to help their families eke out an existence.

One often sees children selling small items on the streets and cafés of the city to make some money for the family.

According to a 2023 report, 7 million of Turkey's 22.2 million children live in poverty.

★ According to a report published by the Istanbul Planning Agency, the monthly budget required for a family of four to meet their basic needs in Istanbul reached 75,700 liras in November.

22,100 Turkish liras, approximately 628 dollars, the minimum wage that the Turkish government just announced for 2025, falls far short of meeting the needs of the family, the daily Duvar reports.

Doğruluk Payı, a fact-checking platform, compiled the average rents for districts of Istanbul province and found there was nowhere in central Istanbul that the minimum wage would be sufficient to pay for housing.

On the outskirts of central Istanbul, there are places where the minimum wage could be sufficient to rent an apartment unit, but it would consume 70% of it.

The increase in the minimum wage is 30 percent, but the inflation rate, as calculated by independent economists, was nearly 90 percent.

Türk-İş, one of the union confederations of labor unions that sat at the table with the government to determine the minimum wage, wanted a 74% hike. If the authorities would have met their demand, the minimum wage would have been 840 dollars.

Türk-İş leaders did not attend the government's meeting where they announced the wage.

Main opposition Republican People's Party leader Özgür Özel said the announced figure "is the last sign of (President) Tayyip Erdoğan's detachment from the realities."

★ Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu said that the government led by the Justice and Development Party is targeting the municipalities held by the opposition parties.

In addition to removing mayors from their offices and appointing trustees in their places, the government is also seizing municipal properties.

The government says that municipalities have debts to the Social Security Agency of Turkey.

★ With President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's decision published in the Official Gazette, the fixed Special Consumption Tax rates on alcoholic beverages have increased by 13%, and analysts expect a price hike for cigarettes to be on the way.

ARTS AND CULTURE

★ Borusan Quartet's New Year concert was on December 25 at Kadıköy Municipality Süreyya Opera House.

The concert feasted music lovers with outstanding examples of chamber music. It offered the opportunity to welcome the new year in the fascinating atmosphere of classical music.

The special concert titled "Miniatures" also allowed the audience to witness the virtuosity and musical unity of the Borusan Quartet again. Compositions by Kreisler, Borodin, Mendelssohn, and Elgar were in the concert.

Music lovers also witnessed the impressive unity of the string quartet with percussion instruments.

Müşfik Galip Uzun, Borusan Istanbul Philharmonic Orchestra's percussion group conductor, accompanied the Borusan Quartet as a guest artist on this special night.

Aydın Büke, flutist at the Istanbul State Symphony Orchestra, and baritone Serhan Bali held an enjoyable conversation before the concert to prepare music lovers for the concert.

★ According to NHK, Japan's national broadcaster, on October 20, 2024, popular artists from 11 Asian countries and regions gathered in Istanbul, Turkey, the host city of the Asia Broadcasters Union's general assembly, and gave distinctly unique performances.

The performances will be on the air on January 4 and then on January 5, 2025.

Hakan Esmer, Serdar Leblebici, Özgür Eryılmaz, and Semih Kaplan explored history, art, and architecture in Rome through their project titled "Rewind/Roma."

The exhibition showcases how the four Turkish artists transformed the timeless spirit of Rome into various artistic expressions.

During this unique journey, Ömer Güçlük, Turkey's Ambassador to Rome, provided valuable insights and contributed photographs to the project.

This exhibition, which captures the essence of Rome in patterns, photographs, and video notes, is open to visitors at CerModern until January 12, 2025

★ The Turkish Forestry Ministry evicted Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality from managing Belgrad Forest, the megacity's largest forest, using riot police after not renewing its contract, reports the daily Duvar.

Early on Tuesday morning, 200 riot police officers arrived at the site with an eviction order issued by the Sarıyer District Governor.

They restricted entry to the area and removed the signature of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality inside Istanbul's largest forest.

The Agriculture and Forestry Ministry stated that sections of the Belgrad Forest, including Bentler, Neşetsuyu, and Kömürcü Bendi nature parks, as well as the entrance gates to the forest, would now be managed by the General Directorate of Nature Conservation and National Parks.

According to the Turkish edition of the British daily Independent, up to 2022, the Justice And Development Party-led Turkish government removed the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality from managing nearly 50 parks and historical buildings.

★ The organizers have extended the "A Collector's Story" exhibition until March 30.

Since its opening on September 21, the exhibition drew 120,000 visitors.

"A Collector's Story" exhibition, which brings together the 52-year adventure of the Taviloğlu Collection with art lovers in seven cultural venues in Istanbul, will continue to welcome visitors in the new year.

The exhibition, featuring works stretching from the 19th century to the present day, is far more than just an art exhibition and reveals how art has become a part of life. It features nearly 2500 works from over 900 artists.

Mustafa Taviloğlu's art collection, which he started in 1972, has grown over fifty years.

Taviloğlu is a prominent Turkish entrepreneur and businessman best known as the founder of Mudo, one of Turkey's most successful retail brands.

Mudo started in 1964 and initially focused on selling gift items.

Later, it evolved into a major retail chain, offering everything from fashion to home furnishings.

★ Istanbul's Pera Museum will have reduced chargers for the new year day. They will also have special film screenings and events.

For cinema enthusiasts, Pera Film has prepared a program of 10 selected films under the title "New Year as a Turning Point."

This program includes films that deal with universal themes such as hope, regret, nostalgia, and new beginnings.  Among the films are:

★ SALT, founded by Garanti BBVA, opened the archive of architect and educator Muhlis Türkmen to online access.

The collection, which was digitized and cataloged within the scope of Salt Research Architecture and Design Archive studies supported by Kalebodur, includes Muhlis Türkmen's personal and ready-made documents.

Photographs of Türkmen's architectural team are among the archive collection.

Muhlis Türkmen, who lived between 1923 and 2014, was a professor at the Istanbul State Academy of Fine Arts for most of his life. He graduated from the same in 1946.

You can visit archives.saltresearch.org to review.

★ President Obama shared his annual list of favorite books, films, and music on social media.

Among the books was "The Anthropologists," the third novel by Turkish author Ayşegül Savaş.

"The Anthropologists" is Savaş's third novel and explores the daily lives of an expatriate couple searching for an apartment.

The story goes beyond relocation to tackle themes of identity and belonging.

Obama praised Savaş's graceful writing and the ability to capture the nuances of human relationships.

★ Turkish police recovered a 1500-year-old statue of a priest stolen seven years ago from a museum yard in the export of the province.

At the court hearing, the persons in possession of the artifact denied historical objects smuggling. One of the suspects said he received the statue as a gift for his son's wedding.

★ Turkey will restore the Süleymaniye complex in Damascus, dating to the Ottoman rule.

The tomb of Vahdettin VI, the last Ottoman sultan, who went into exile after the abolishing of the Ottoman Sultanate and the establishment of the Republican regime in Turkey, is in the complex.

According to Wikipedia, Commissioned by the Ottoman sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, the western building of the complex was built, following the plans of renowned Ottoman architect Mimar Sinan, between 1554 and 1559.

Another building was added eastwards from it in 1566 to be used as a madrasa (which became known as the Salimiyya Madrasa, named after Suleiman's son Selim II, although this building, too, may have been commissioned by Suleiman before his death).

Although not the first Ottoman building in Damascus, the complex introduced the Ottoman architectural style to Damascus. In the centuries following its construction, it became an important stop on the Syrian route of pilgrims to Mecca.

★ According to Arkeonews, After 20 years of research, Turkish archaeologists pinpointed the exact location of the legendary Battle of Granicus, where Alexander the Great won his first significant battle in his pursuit of Asia Minor.

The Asia Minor roughly corresponds to the Asiatic part of modern Turkey.

In the battle in May 334 BCE, Alexander's Macedonian army defeated the Persian army, one of the most powerful, for the first time, enabling him to advance deep into his adversary's territory.

According to Prof. Reyhan Körpe, a historian from Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University and the scientific advisor to the project, the battle was near a river once known as the Granicus, about 62 miles east of modern-day Çanakkale city in northwestern Turkey,

The search began with identifying the route Alexander and his army took to enable the archaeologists to focus their efforts.

They not only found the site of the unforgettable battle but also detected the villages that were involved.

★ Other headlines in archaeological news:

  - At the 12,000-year-old Boncuklu Tarla (Beaded Field) in Turkey's southeastern province of Mardin, archaeologists unearthed a 6.5-foot-long stone block measuring 8 inches in width. This region has witnessed the rise and fall of 25 civilizations throughout its rich history.

  - Excavations at the historic Harran archaeological site in a cathedral in southeastern Turkey's Şanlıurfa province, listed on UNESCO's World Heritage Tentative List, have revealed mosaic tiles and stained glass fragments believed to be the oldest in the region. Archaeologists date the structure to the fifth century CE.

  - In Harran, archaeologists also unearthed for Iron Age dog burials. Dr. Mehmet Önal, head of the excavation, stated the ancients may have buried the dogs in a ritual associated with Gula, the goddess of healing.

 - Archaeologists found a 2100-year-old bird-shaped soldier's whistle at Oluz mound excavations in North Central Amasya province in Turkey. The discovery sheds light on the ancient military practices of the region, believed to date back to the reign of King Mithridates VI, the most powerful ruler of the Mithridatic Kingdom, before the Roman period.

  - Experts started work on restoring the Roman-era bath complex, spanning nearly 70 acres in the ancient city of Ephesus in Turkey. The complex has a gymnasium and sports area.
