NEWS

★ According to BBC, Ekrem İmamoğlu, Istanbul Metropolitan Mayor, seen as the biggest rival to President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, appeared in court for the first time since his arrest last month and jailing.

The prosecutors charged him with corruption and terrorism and threatening the chief prosecutor.

İmamoğlu told the court he was there because he won the Istanbul elections three times and rejected all the charges against him.

Hundreds of İmamoğlu's supporters gathered outside the court.

The Erdoğan administration also pressured Istanbul University to revoke İmamoğlu's degree. In Turkey, one cannot be a president without a college degree.

Analysts say Mr. Erdoğan uses everything to eliminate his rivals for the next presidential elections, although he cannot be a candidate due to term limits. To solve the issue, he has been pushing for a new constitution to eliminate the term limits.

Mass protests throughout Turkey followed İmamoğlu's arrests. Police arrested around 2000 demonstrators and scores of journalists. Since then, authorities have (AFP) released 185.

In related news, Deutsche Welle wrote why the European Union has not acted against Turkey's increasing repression.

The article said Turkey's growing strategic value to European security may be a factor. Read more >> here <<

★ According to Bianet, a public prosecutor in Istanbul is seeking prison sentences for seven journalists detained while covering protests against the arrest of Ekrem İmamoğlu.

The journalists named in the indictment are Yasin Akgül, a photojournalist with Agence France-Presse; Ali Onur Tosun, a reporter for "Now Haber"; Bülent Kılıç, a photojournalist; reporters Zeynep Kuray and Hayri Tunç; Kurtuluş Arı, a photojournalist for İstanbul Metropolitan Municipality; and Gökhan Kam, a photojournalist for Bakırköy Municipality.

In the indictment, the prosecutor accused the journalists of being present not to report on the events but to actively participate in the protests.

★ According to the Times of Israel, Israeli officials confirmed talks with Turkey on Syria aimed at preserving security and stability. The official said that they rejected any change in the deployment of foreign forces in Syria and, in particular, the establishment of Turkish bases in Palmyra.

The talks took place in Azerbaijan on Wednesday, the Times of Israel wrote.

In related news, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu complained about Turkey to President Trump when he visited the White House. Some news sources say he asked the U. S not to sell any F-35 advanced fighter jets to Turkey.

However, Mr. Trump said, "I have great relations with a man named Erdoğan. I like him, and he likes me. We have never had a problem."

Analysts point out numerous issues between the two countries since President Trump's first term, and he forgot to mention them.

Here are some of the issues:

★ According to the British daily The Guardian, Özgür Özel, the leader of Turkey's largest opposition party, has hit out at Keir Starmer, accusing the British prime minister of ignoring the arrest of Ekrem İmamoğlu, the mayor of Istanbul, and democratic backsliding in Turkey.

Özgür Özel told the Guardian that Keir Starmer is making a historic mistake by seeing İmamoğlu's arrest as a domestic Turkish issue.

★ According to the Turkish service of the BBC, Turkish lawyers said there was credible evidence that supported claims of unlawful strip-searching, abuse, and mistreatment by police during recent protests in Istanbul.

Sezgin Tanrıkulu, a parliamentarian from the opposition Republican People's Party, first raised the allegations. In a statement to the press, Tanrıkulu said officials subjected a woman to beating and sexual harassment.

Justice Minister Yılmaz Tunç dismissed these allegations, stating that Turkish authorities remain committed to a "zero tolerance for mistreatment" policy.

According to the Stockholm Center for Freedom, unlawful strip-search and sexual harassment in police detention have been longstanding problems in Turkey.

★ President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan sued the opposition leader Özgür Özel for calling him a junta leader for approximately 131,000 dollars in local currency, reports the news outlet Bianet.

In a local political speech at his party's extraordinary convention, Mr. Özel used the term while describing the arrest of Istanbul Mayor Mr. İmamoğlu as "the March 19 coup attempt."

★ The Turkish government ordered X to close certain accounts, usually those of the government opponents and activists who have been protesting the government in the past few months.

In turn, the Turkish X users started migrating to Bluesky to avoid censorship, reports the independent news outlet Bianet.

However, the Turkish government may also pressure Bluesky to close accounts.

★ According to Middle East Eye, Turkish Foreign Affairs Minister Hakan Fidan said on Wednesday that Turkey is ready to purchase at least 20 billion dollars worth of spare parts, ammunition, and electronics for its military if the U. S lifts sanctions over Turkey's acquisition of Russian S-400 missiles.

Since 2019, the U. S has kept six F-35s in a warehouse that Turkey paid for but did not get the delivery of.

Mr. Fidan stated that Turkey wants the U. S to reintegrate Turkish defense firms into the F-35 production chain.

★ Other headlines in the news:

• The Republican People's Party, the main opposition party, re-elects Özgür Özel as the party chief. The party plans rallies throughout the country.
• Trump steps into Turkey-Israel spat.
• Erdoğan meets the pro-Kurdish DEM party delegation. Analysts say Erdoğan wants to split the opposition by talking sweet to DEM and getting them on its side for a constitutional change so that he can run for president again by eliminating the term limits.
• Weak password ends çiğ köfte drug op.
