★ Pope Leo 14 is expected to visit Iznik, Turkey, to mark the 1700th anniversary of the First Council of Nicaea, a key event in Christian history.
The late Pope Francis had planned the trip, and Pope Leo 14 confirmed he would go. It will be the first foreign visit for the Pope.
The exact date and program for Pope Leo 14's visit to İznik are not yet final. Istanbul-based Fener Greek Patriarch Bartholomew will convey the official invitation by attending the Pope's inauguration ceremony in the Vatican on May 18.
Reports anticipate that the visit will take place as a state visit following this invitation, also with the official invitation of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
Before the visit, Pope will likely visit Ankara and meet Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
Turkish officials have also started preparing for the visit to ensure a safe trip for the Pope, although the Pope has not set a date yet.
Iznik, the ancient Nicaea, is where the council took place in 325.
★ The much-awaited announcement from the rebel Kurdistan Workers' Party on ending their armed conflict with the Turkish state came on Monday.
Here is some background:
Last year, Devlet Bahçeli, the extreme-right Nationalist Action Party leader, changed course and stopped bashing the Kurdish insurgents and the pro-Kurdish DEM Party, and started courting them.
Bahçeli suggested that Abdullah Öcalan, the jailed leader of the Kurdistan Workers' Party, impress on the rebels to give up their war on the Turkish state. He even said that Öcalan can address the Turkish parliament. All unthinkable before that.
Öcalan obliged and asked the rebels based in the northern Iraq mountains to stop their fight.
Political scientists and others now wonder if this is going to be a genuine end to the armed conflict between the Turkish state and the rebels.
Turkish markets rose on the Kurdistan Workers' Party's announcement.
Although most credit Devlet Bahçeli, only a small amount went to President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan for backing Bahçeli.
The opposition Republican People's Party also supports the peace effort.
The DEM Party members were the happiest. However, analysts point out that a peace proposal in 2013 ended in the conflict resuming.
★ The Nationalist Action Party proposed a law regulating street interviews broadcast on YouTube and other channels.
The proposal came after President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said that interviews are terrorizing the streets.
Analysts say that what bothers Mr. Erdoğan is that in the interviews, people can speak their mind freely and criticize the Justice and Development Party administration.
The interviews are also venues for journalists who cannot otherwise take to the airwaves due to the Justice and Development Party administration's clampdown on the press.
★ Russian and Ukrainian delegations started meeting in Istanbul to end the war.
At the same time, Turkey's southern province of Antalya hosted an informal NATO foreign ministers' summit.
U.S. Senator Lindsay Graham was also in Turkey. He visited Mustafa Kemal Atatürk's mausoleum in Ankara.
In a press release on his Senate webpage, Sen. Graham said:
"I have traveled to Turkey this week for the express purpose of assessing the situation in Syria. I am very inclined to support sanctions relief for Syria under the right conditions. However, we must remember that the current leadership in Syria achieved its position through force of arms, not through the will of its people."

★ According to Bianet, police arrested 97 students and a journalist at the Boğaziçi University for protesting a cleric who had made public statements defending child abuse and violence against women.
The students also protested the university administration, now under the rule of a president appointed by the ruling conservative Justice and Development Party.
The Boğaziçi University Islamic Studies Club invited the cleric as a guest speaker to an event.
★ According to Bianet, a report for 2025, prepared for the United Nations' Fourth Universal Periodic Review on Turkey, revealed the deepening crisis in LGBTI+'s access to human rights.
The report writes that Turkey systematically violates the rights of LGBTI+s and has been rapidly moving away from international human rights standards.

★ "In the Belly of the Whale," Eda Soylu and Hatice Utkan's exhibition at Istanbul's Barın Han, combines poetry and art.
The two artists combine painting, sculpture, and poetry to explore a new approach to art.
Eda Soylu was born in 1990 in Istanbul. She studied painting at RISD, the Rhode Island School of Design.
The school selected her to participate in the European Honors Program in Rome as part of the RISD in Rome: European Honors Program, a pre-graduation residency program for RISD and Brown University students. Born in Ankara in 1990, Beril Ateş graduated first in graphic design from Bilkent University in 2011.
Her artwork frequently explores themes of collective pain, emotions, and how society represents joy. Through her mixed-media pieces, she challenges the habit of assigning colors to emotions and questions the possibility of unity in a society shaped by lovelessness.
Collectors have acquired Ateş's artwork for various collections, and she continues to explore new forms of existence through her art.
★ Beyoğlu Mayor İnan Güney from the opposition Republican People's Party has launched a significant initiative: the Beyoğlu Culture and Arts Platform.
He aims to revitalize the district's cultural and artistic scene. This effort follows decades when the municipality, under the ruling conservative Justice and Development Party, largely shunned entertainment and art events in the district, causing many art venues to disappear.
The platform has a primary goal: to make art accessible to all Beyoğlu residents and visitors, transforming the area into a vibrant hub for culture and art.
Mayor Güney envisions this initiative as a collaborative effort and has called on Istanbul's art community to join hands and participate.
Demonstrating his commitment, Mayor Güney organized a culture and art gathering on May 9 at the Barcelo Hotel. At this event, he shared his vision for the new platform.
The gathering successfully brought together prominent figures from the art world, including cultural attaches and representatives from art galleries, cinema, theater, music, and literature.

Sevincy is a multidisciplinary contemporary artist known for her innovative use of materials and techniques in her art.
Originally from Istanbul, Turkey, Sevincy is based in Los Angeles.
CerModern continues its mission as a key center for contemporary art, education, and promoting environmental awareness.

★ The "Story of Ani" exhibition started in Kars as part of the "102 Exhibitions in the 102nd Year: A Journey to Anatolia's Cultural Heritage in the Light of the Republic" project by the General Directorate of Cultural Heritage and Museums.
The exhibition is at the Kars Archaeology and Ethnography Museum and it features 196 of the 244 artifacts registered in the museum's inventory, covering 5000 years of history.
Ani, located in present-day northeastern Turkey, was once a powerful medieval Armenian city. However, Mongol invasions, earthquakes, and shifting trade routes led to its decline and eventual abandonment in the 18th century. Today, Ani's ruins are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
★ In an illegal excavation at a private home's yard in the Zile district of Turkey's Tokat province, Greek mosaics thought to be from the Roman era emerged.

★ One of the world's longest-running archaeology organizations, the Turkey International Excavation, Research and Archaeometry Symposium, will gather for the 45th time this year.
The event will take place between May 26 and 30, 2025. The Ministry of Culture and Tourism and Mersin University have jointly organized the symposium.
The symposium is a major international archaeology conference. It provides a platform for archaeologists and researchers working in Turkey. They share their latest findings from excavations, surface surveys, and archaeometric analyses.
The symposium's long history highlights its significance within the archaeological community.
★ According to the site Anatolian archaeology.net, during excavations for the foundation of a house in İznik, Bursa, crews uncovered mosaics believed to date back to the time of Jesus.
The discovery coincides with the recent announcement of Pope Leo 14 planning a visit to İznik, creating a historic coincidence.
The mosaics feature figures of a ship and a deer.
Archaeologists suggest these mosaics could belong to the early Christian period, possibly even to the era of Jesus.
